What is Vitamin D3
Vitamin D is a nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium from the food we eat.
Taking vitamin D from an early age is extremely important, as it is involved in building and maintaining healthy bones and teeth, plays a role in heart and kidney health. This is because the body can absorb calcium (a major component of bones) only in the presence of vitamin D.
- Participates in building strong bones
- It is important for the strength of the teeth
- Helps in the absorption of calcium from food
- Supports heart and kidney function
Why is vitamin D so necessary for children?
In children, vitamin D deficiency can lead to the development of rickets. Then the bones soften and become susceptible to fractures. The discovery of the vitamin at the beginning of the 20th century was a real breakthrough in the treatment of this disease.
During childhood and adolescence, parents should pay special attention to the supply of vitamin D. This is especially important during these periods of life due to the active growth, formation of all systems and, at the same time, the continuous process of learning in adolescents. If we add all the extracurricular activities with which modern children are charged, it becomes clear that the load on the fragile organism is enormous. It is for this reason that the child needs a full range of vitamin and mineral supplements.
That is why the intake of vitamin D in children (and not only) is extremely important, especially in the winter months when there are not so many sunny days. Scientists have found that in order to get it through the rays, we need to be exposed to the sun for between 15 and 30 minutes every day in the range between 10 am and 3 pm.
What else should we know about vitamin D?
It is a fat-soluble compound. When we talk about it, it is good not to forget that it is a group of vitamins. The most important of these are vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol.
Both vitamins play the same role in the body, yet have a slightly different molecular structure.
What is the difference between vitamin D2 and D3?
• Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is found in foods of plant origin.
• Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is found in foods of animal origin and is synthesized in the body when exposed to sunlight.
According to the National Institute of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements, both types increase vitamin D levels in a person’s blood.
Recently, many studies have shown that vitamin D3 has some advantages over D2. Research shows that twice-weekly supplementation with vitamin D3 is more effective at increasing vitamin D levels than the same amount of vitamin D2.
Foods high in vitamin D3
Foods naturally high in vitamin D3 come from animal sources.
Among them are:
– Cod liver oil
– Trout
– Salmon
– Eggs
– Beef liver
– Tuna fish
– Cheese
However, many of these foods are not favorites of teenagers. Most children and teenagers would have a hard time eating cod liver, for example. In addition, in order to obtain the required amount of vitamins, they must do so regularly and in sufficient quantities. What we get from food may not be enough to replenish the daily dose of vitamins in the body as a whole.
In addition, the absorption of minerals and vitamins from any food is quite weak: something is lost in the cooking process, something depends on the characteristics of the specific organism – acidity, metabolism, etc.
And this is where nutritional supplements come in. Their advantage is that they have a calculated optimal daily dose and most often combine several well-chosen vitamins. They are also much easier to take than several individual vitamins.
